My buddy who owns an engine shop says I need a automatic and should turn low 11's to mid 10's and he never sugar coats anything
I have formed my opinion from spending years at the drag strip pitted with all the other fastest drag machines at divisional meets. I used a very specialized 2 speed power glide tranny. We were not trying to go fast because of index 7.90 or 8.90 class racing. But when you get into CE racing. Competition eliminator and you want to run under the national index you never see another automatic tranny. It's all air or lever shifted manuals
I do not believe that an auto tranny can beat a quality Manual in a well setup car. I had friends that the only change was to throw out the PG or TH400 and install a lenco 2-3-4 or 5 speeds and instantly went quicker ET's because of the power savings of a manual tranny.
i love my 383 . they say a pic is worth a thousand words so here is a pic... and also here is a vid as well, that must be worth a million words..... i hate typing so that works for me.
You get 20mpg with a 250 degree camshaft, 3500 rpm stall converter, and 406 cubic inches? How do you do that?

The torque converter is a lock up. The cam is a custom grind that has less duration at .020" than a typical cam of it's size at .050" would to make a wider power band. The squish is a nice tight .034". My low and mid lift flows are extremely good in my heads which I believe is important on a street motor. The high lift flows are also excelent. I spent a lot of time tuning the carb with an O2 sensor and a vacuum gage, and I'm not talking just main jets but air bleeds, power valve, PVB orifices, etc... I also spent time tailoring my ignition curve with both the vacuum and mechanical advances.
That's how you get mileage, drivability and power in the same package. It runs good on pump gas with the 11.8 to 1 compression also.

I agree somewhat George, but a Lenco is basically the heart of an automatic, a planetary gear set, a sprag, and a clutch pack. It is just missing the pump, valve body and torque converter, although you can run one with a converter. It's not a manual you would find in street cars. In slower cars such as our street cars, automatics are usually faster the sticks, all things being equal.
427sbc with a solid roller cam and EFI here. I also just finished a solid axle 4-link conversion with 35 spline axles, detroit locker etc. No track times yet, but I have 10.5" slicks mounted and ready to go.

That is the Autofab setup. I think it was around 4,800 assembled with the Moser brakes. The eBrake cable even hooked up and works! Heck I sold all my IRS equipment for almost half that.

I could swear there was a car in that vid but I was distracted with something way hotter.
2900 stall (not really enough), solid roller cam....see sig. info.
Damn C3 Stroker, that is sweet. And I bet Grandma could drive it to the store. Can you imagine what she could do to the smartass Mustang owner that will inevitably pull up alongside and rev his motor. Granny would smoke him. His freinds would tease him for being blown away by Granny in a stock small block Vette.

Thanks for the compliments.....yes, it does drive like a stocker, but hearing the cam gives people second thoughts before challenging it, though.
