Your thoughts on using one of these? Any concern with charging generating fumes from battery? Battery IS NOT sealed, remove cap when charging? Thanks !
It's really not a "charger" but a "maintainer. I have 4 connected to (various) vehicles and 2 on motorcycles. Never a problem and everything now starts no matter how long it sits. You don't remove the caps.
I agree with TWINRAY. Before I bought a Battery Tender "Junior" my battery always seemed weak. The minute that I pull the Vette into the garage I hook it up and walk away. Fast and reliable starts ever since. Well worth the money!!!
I have an 88' Chevy PU that I use maybe 4 times a year. I've had the battery tender hooked up to it 24/7 for the past 5 years. No issues. Also use them on the Vettes and the kids boat battery during the winter.
I use automatic tenders on my Corvette, my Polaris ATP, riding lawnmower, and our son's '63 Nova wagon during the off-season. The automatic type charges only when necessary rather than a contant low amperage charge. I recommend you spend the (very) few extra dollars and get the automatic type. They are available from lots of sources.
I have two of the small, waterproof type, and one of the original ones. I use one on the 'Vette, and I made a stand to store the RV and tractor batteries over the winter. They work great. The main thing to keep in mind with batteries, is once you let them discharge AND freeze, it is a paperweight. You won't be bringing it back from the dead.
I have a Deltran Tender Jr and a couple of cheap generics. The cheap ones only have a one color indicator light to tell you it's hooked up. They do not have a red (charging) and green (fully charged) light like the actual Battery Tender.
Last year I had a battery fail after using one of the cheap units on it for the winter. It was a 7 year Exide battery that lasted only 2 years. Coincidence? Maybe and maybe not. From now on, I'll stick with the name brand battery maintainers. I prefer to know the more exact condition of the charging sequence as shown by the Deltran.

I have a Battery Tender brand and a couple of generic type chargers from Walmart. The $19 ones from Walmart work just as well, and have an indicator light to let you know if it is charging, fully charged, or not hooked up. All work great.
