Default Removable Rear Window Revisited?

Forum: I just finished doing a search on this subject, I have to have it!
The posts I read were from 07/08 and I wonder if anything has changed.
Are there any new options for parts? Should I buy what I can on E bay and piece together the rest? How good will and old orignal window/frame look, should I try for new?
I'm going to do this, the question is when and how much. TIA

I would gather all the parts you can.
The frame to body seal I would buy new $35.
You can still find decent windows and frames or find a good frame and a glass shop can make you a tempered glass with any tint for about $85.
I love mine.
Good luck you will not regret it.

I think Wilcox has a write up on this on their site.

Nope. Not enough 'volume' to justify a kit.

Hi R,
I believe the window frame is extruded aluminum. So even if the frame you get is marred a bit I'd think you could do some polishing on it with good results.
Regards,
Alan

Scotchbrite does a good job of buffing surface imperfections out of aluminum. Steel wool is good on steel...but it can scratch and darken aluminum. I would not advise using that.

I'm just about to embark on the process, and it sounds easy enough. Here's a good website with an explanation:

http://www.europeancorvette.com/html...ear_window.htm

Its been a PITA trying to find the parts.

A couple questions though for those who have done the conversion.

1. Is this part necessary:

I'm pretty sure this is the piece that the lock bolts to. I have a feeling these were installed on 68-72s. On my '75, there is a cut out, albeit its not big enough, for where this should be. I'm figuring I could drill holes in the fiberglass to bolt the lock to. Anyone have a problem with this?

Also, I'm looking for this little black piece as well. Anyone know what to call it or have one?

I believe the piece you have cirecled in red was only used in the in the 68 and 69 years. I ordered a new set of halo panels with the cutouts from one of the vendors a few years back. They did not contain the plastic peice you have circled and worked just fine.

As far as the latches. I used some uclips and bolted directly to the top.

I would like to see photos of this. This is the first I have heard of this mod being done. Can you do it in a 77? Is it like the setup in the avalanches where it pops out? Or does it slide down like a door window would. Im guess pop out like avalanche.

My 1971 doesn't have that extra circled piece, but someone here was refinishing or replacing them on a 1970. They may have ended at some point in the 1970 model year or early 1971.

The window pops out and stores in a hinged tray above the rear storage area.

Well, I really didn't do a write up but I did post a link on our site that shows the installation of the rear window from the AIM.

As long as you can find a complete unit from a donor car you can install this in your car without any problems. Make absolutely sure you get the lower mounting brackets and plastic insulators from the donor car (numbers 5 and 6 in the lower picture on out site)! Some people will take the window, tray, hinges and forget about the guides riveted to the body.

Your car will also be marked for where the guides are to be installed too!

Here is the link to the pictures.. I've done this job multiple times and as mentioned above it is great when installed. http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...lp.php?hID=198

If you have any other questions or need real pictures post again. I don't have pics on this computer at the moment, but I should have some at the office.
