Default Headlamp light

My headlamp light comes on occasionally on my '71 when going over bumps and the like. I've looked for an adjustment or a sensor but no luck. Does anyone know what to do about this?

Each headlight has a microswitch for the warning light. As long as the switch is fully depressed the warning light stays off but while the headlights are going up it comes on.

You should see a pair of wires going to it if you look up from below through the valance openings.

The adjustment is at the actuator clevis nut. Remove the springs and the cotter pin from the swivel pin. Then remove the pin and you can pull the clevis down from the mounting bracket and turn it counterclockwise to lengthen a bit.

You shouldn't need to lengthen it much since it only comes on when you go over bumps. Maybe one or two turns.

Also have a good look at the switch(both of them,L and R) when you get your head up in there. They are made of plastic and yours may be starting to crack or fall apart, hopefully just a minor adjustment is all that is needed.

I had a replace one of them that broke on mine. You can also unplug them which will make the light go out.

I wish someone had told Bubba that so he hadn't cut the wire right next to the switch connector.

I assume this is happening only when the lights are on, correct ?

Hi 71 LS5,
You might also check the 'stop' for the headlight door in the open position. The mechanism has an 'eccentric' to keep it from bouncing while you're driving. Your headlight door might be open enough to push the switch's button to shut the warning light off, but not lock fully up.
Regards,
Alan
