Default Half a---- shafts,help

I just threw my tape measure n climbed out from under my 80. Aren't the h-shafts supposed to be the same length. I have 1 thats 3/8in. longer, all new a year ago. Can someone tell me correct length? And also, whats the difference between 79 & 80 outer yolks, spindles & bearings? All 80 stuff is new(not done by same as shafts)and I'm going with 79 rear. Thanks!

I think thats right, because the motor is off center to towards the passenger side so that offset translates in the rear also.

I don't know if this helps you or not, but I have a complete 78' rear assembly in my garage floor and measuring from center of the universals, those are the same length.

How long are they ? At this point I'm getting cautious, since it's my daily driver.

Aw, come on.... Both those steel tubes are exactly the length of the forearms on the Chinese guy who cut them.

Ooops! One matched his left arm and one matched his right....

No...the differential has an offset in it to compensate for the off center engine/tranny. Half shafts are the same length

If you want to buy two that are the same length, I have the entire rear assembly in my garage and I'll part it out.

I also have the complete diff with Auburn posi and 4.56 gear, too!

all 63-79 shafts are 13 7/8" center to center

63-79 Spindle Flange (outboard)

Van Steel,
That explains how he could have 2 different lengths.

Side note:

Ecklers lists
#4097 for manual trans 1980 & 1981 and
#4098 for automatic trans 1980 & 1981 and
#4097 for all 1982

Differences are in the U-Joints I guess.

Correct, and all 80-81 4 spds use the same joint as all 82's. 1350 serie joints. 1330 on the 80-81 autos.

Can I put 79 flanges on 80 spindles? I'm putting 79 posi w/373's,79 shafts(79 4spd ujoints same as my 80)and I guess I need to change flanges. All the 80 bearings are new. But I thin my drive shaft is 1in. too short for 79 rear but joints are again same size.

Yes the spindle flanges from 63-79 will slide onto your spindles. All the spindles are the same from 65-82. You need to make sure that you torque the spindle nut to 100 ft/lbs. If the cotter pin hole doesn't line up, go tighter. You also need to make sure that the 79 shafts you are using have a half shaft flange on them.

You also need to change the following:

Strut rods
Strut rod bracket
Diff tongue bracket
