Default Interior Vinyl Paints??????

I have some faded interior components. I keep seeing interior paint advertised on various websites like ecklers, volvette, the last detail, and others. Has anyone had success stories with these products, i would paint every part of the interior if it was good. I am talking about the main dash pad, the console, the pillar post pads, a little bit on the corner of a door panel. Do these products work well or would it end up worse than before, help Please!

I can tell you with first hand experience that SEM makes and incredible interior vinyl dye. I went from a dirty maroon color to a "flame red", and the dye is very user friendly. Depending on what color you are going to go to, will depend on how much of the dye you will need. The reds have a low pigment amount, so it will take more of the dye to cover the old color. If you are going to go with black, you won't need very much at all. The biggest factor in getting a quality appearance, is PREP! SEM makes a few products that you can use that will ensure a good, clean surface. I used SEM soap, and this is almost like a body-wash, and you rub it on with a grey scotchbrite pad, and then you rinse it off. Just make sure that the surface is clean, and take your time.

I used about 20 cans of the vinyl dye for my interior, and I did everything including the seats. Again, if you are going with black you won't need that much. Something that one of the local shops recommended to me was for them to mix up quarts of the color, and then this could be sprayed on using an inexpensive spray gun and an air compressor. Of course I didn't find that out until AFTER I had already sprayed the interior. So talk to your SEM supplier and I'm sure they can make some suggestions for you based on the color that you choose.

I HIGHLY recommed SEM, and if you take your time, you will see great results! If I can provide any other help, just let me know! Good luck.

Again....bear in mind that everything in my interior was maroon...except for the dash, which was tan.

I just used the SEM the other day on some armrests that were red. Painted them black and they look just fine. SEM works good in my book.

I bought the Oyster colored dye from Zip and it worked great. I did the door panels, over head trim, center break area with 2 cans. it goes on real thin so a couple of coats are needed. just make sure you clean off the old amour all and stuff with some alcohol first. Looks real good, just like new.

Default Dye

I'm in the process of doing my interior now, Mine is med saddle, I got a can of the spray dye from one of the suppliers shot one of the trim pieces then took it down to my paint supplier and he took a color shot of it and mixed me up a quart of Dupont Vinyl Color, very easy to use, comes ready to shoot out of the can, no mixing but pricey about $85.00 a quart, I have just about everything done but I suspect I'm going to need another pint. If you go with the spray bombs make sure you get all the same lot # or you may have a variation in color. You will be amazed of the results you get really dresses up your project.

Good Luck
Ed

A pint of SEM 'Color Coat' vinyl dye (about $15) and a $4 Preval bottle/gas-cannister sprayer are all you need to make your interior look like new...in any color you want. You must clean all the old parts--to get completely rid of the Armor-All you've been using on them , then dry them and shoot. Light, covering coats is all you need; don't get it 'runny wet'. Great stuff, and easy to use. (Get them at a pro auto paint supply store.) You can dye and re-dye interior parts as many times as you want...unless you paint them ; then you can never dye them again.

Has anyone bought SEM products over the internet? The auto parts suppliers around here are not that good and I know I'm looking at special orders and waiting for the product to come in if I go thru them. I would prefer to order over the internet if possible.

Do they have a site?

Thank you! It was a lot of work, and it's not perfect by any stretch...but I got the satisfaction of being able to say that I did it myself. Plus, I can't afford to drop $2000 on a new interior...which is literally as much as I spent on the car!!

SEM does have a site that will show you where to buy SEM products. The site is: http://semproducts.com/Suppliers.asp?p=1

Sometimes it is not cost effective to order it over the internet, since you have to pay for the shipping on each can PLUS the cost of the dye. My suggestion is to figure out what color is going to work for you, and order a bunch at a time. I think there is 6 cans in a case, but this might save you on freight charges. All cans would be shipped ground, since they consider an aerosol can to be hazardous materials, so it's probably going to take just as long to have a local vendor order the parts from one of their warehouses. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Trevor

Ok so I finally finished my interior and it is looking SWEET! Drove the car today and tested everything, my only complaint is that i put in a new blower motor switch and now it doesnt blow! Complete new vacuum kit for the ducts worked miracles though... my headlights actually lift now and all the doors function! Ill post some pictures once i take them of the new silver too on all of the components, that vinyl spray is really amazing and i highly recommend.

So which product did you end up using?

4 cans of SEM Color coat Vinyl Dye in the spray cans, 74 silver. I prepped each part with a thorough wipedown with rubbing alcohol. Light coats, three coats total... no fisheye, brilliant shine. Although a fuzzbal did somehow fly into and stick to my main top dash pad while it was hanging to dry and that created a nightmare spot. I can still find it but other people cant! I also took the liberty to slap a new front carpet kit in 80/20 loop silver, pre backed with jute. That really sealed the deal on my interior!
