Gosh, these sound so familiar...
I listen and read very closely because when it comes to heads, cam, lift, duration... I know nothing. When Tony posted 12 hours prior to my last post I had already made the order. It came today.

AFR 180's , RPM Performer manifold, Valve covers, Lunati cam with lifters, Lunati rocker rollers, 2400 stall torque converter, Summit gear drive timing set. and all the bolts and gaskets to put it together.

What we want is a respectable street car. We will never go to the drag strip with it, but there will be times it will see a show of acceleration. Especially at the lights when the over populated mustang makes a show.

SO that brings me to the timing gears. Are the Summit gear drive timing gears junky? I am sure I will be able to return them for a different set. I will be using gear drive timing though. Chain or belt is not in my future.

Thanks guys I really do appreciate everyones input, Marty

Timing gears are on the noisey side, good choice with the AFR 180 heads.

You can do the carpet anytime - get the engine right while you have the chance.

There is no reason in the universe to run gears on a street engine, period. Invest in a Cloyes Tru-Roller and call it good.

There's also no reason to run full roller rockers on the street, but that'll start a big OT discussion so we'll just end on that IMHO note

Good luck with your top - I'm sure you'll be very happy with your combo.

Gear noise from an engine that's making < 1HP/CID doesn't impress me much...but it is a cool sound.

I guess I don't understand spending money on sound vs. power...but that's just me. I look at cool sound as a byproduct of cool power. But...everyone to their own

yeah, i hear ya on it being a byproduct. thats why its cool, and why people want. theres a market for appearances. they do make and sell "noisier" gear drives. and also the comp cams thumper cam line is made just for the right exhaust sound. makes a lot less power than a similarly spec'd XE or Magnum line cam. I think mufflers are in the same boat too. if your not running straight pipe, or the highest flowing mufflers available (if you cant run straight pipe), its all for the sound (of power).
