I may have to end up replacing the speedo cable, and notice that my parts book lists a 1 piece (72") and two seperate ones, and upper and lower. I'm assuming the factory used an two piece set up, and the one piece is aftermarket. If so, does anyone know which side of the firewall the two connected, either pass compartment or engine compartment?
I have a 71 with 454 and auto trans. No cruise control. Mine has the 2 piece speedo cable. I recently replaced the speedo cable in my 76 coupe and was able to purchase the original 2-piece delco cable from Dr. Rebuild or MAMotorworks. Cant remember which one, but it was one of those.
The 2 piece speedo cable has a connection under the car (outside the firewall) down by the bell housing.
mine has 4 speed, no cruise. the weather is supposed to be nice the next couple of days so I should be able to get it out and up off of the ground and get under and see what I have. the threaded ring on the end that goes into the trans is missing; it either broke and came off, or got pushed up the cable. if missing, and I have to replace it, i'm hoping it's a two piece and I can just replace the lower, which would be easier, I hope.
update-the end nut is missing, so I will be replacing the cable. It appears to be a one piece variety, as I traced it from the trans all the way to the firewall, and no union/joint. I noticed that it doesn't go straight into the firewall, but appears to go in sideways and I'm guessing then turns straight into the speedometer. How hard is it to get up to the back of the speedometer and get it loose and then replaced?
HiT,
I believe the fitting at the speedo head has a spring clip that releases the cable end, and the end at the trans has the knurled nut.
You CAN get your hand up there behind the speedo but its not easy. Take a good look at your AIM so you'll know what your fingers are feeling around for.
Good Luck!

Alan
