So I was thinking about running power to my HEI directly from the battery with a toggle switch and a 20amp fuse. I know I know not the way to do it. My line of thinking is that this would give me kind of a anti-theft device given that the toggle would be hidden. Go ahead, I live in Florida and i`m used to the heat.

Not a problem. Why not pull power from Battery Cable Lug at Starter Solenoid? ... that's where lotsa race cars pull from.
I ran power from starter soleniod to a relay, then to HEI. Pull power from a ignition source to operate relay, put toggle switch in ignition source. Do not have to operate toggle everytime that you want to start car. Only when you want to use as theft deterent.
Are most Vettes stolen via a dumb *** jumping in and hot wiring....
or a guy with a tow truck? I'm willing to bet it's the tow truck but what do you guys know or think???
What you are describing is a well used approach (back before alarm systems were available). Just connect one wire to the end of the harness wire and the other to the coil. You do not want to run a new power wire from under the dash, as the one in the harness is a calibrated resistance wire that needs to stay in the electrical system.
