What about running two exhaust systems? Put a cut out in there and run sidepipes and under car. Flip switch to pick what you want. Would add some weight, but best of both worlds?
Hmmm I wonder if it could be dont, might take some planning, if it could be I would definitly do it with the electric cut offs
My friend came by at lunch today to show me his new Grand Sport. NOOOOIICE !!!!! He showed me his NNP exhaust with the Exhaust Commander (other competitor brand is Mild to Wild Exhaust)… It quiets the exhaust with the flick of a button (garage door opener type control). It would indeed be very nice to have that option on a long trip – or on a quiet evening ride while listening to your sweetheart ….well never mind that last part…..anyway…..
For us C3 side exhaust guys – rather than having 2 systems (I know it’s a goofy idea) – but off the top of my head – do you think a U-shaped bypass pipe w/a very small muffler could be welded that would reside ‘parallel’ to the sidepipes as they go towards the fenders from the motor. It would have to be in the same plane as the current pipes to maintain ground clearance. I guess you would have to have 2 valves on each side to not be restrictive when the U-shaped bypass is not being used.

The Tremac overdrive makes all the difference. When you want to get your foot into it you can run them loud, but for highway cruising it's reasonably quite.

I can only build resonators that will fit inside the sidepipes with 2.5" cores though, not 3". The Hooker "quiet" inserts are quiet because they absolutely KILL the exhaust flow & cause a TON of exhaust backpressure. I wouldn't run something that restrictive on a 4-banger let alone a V-8. I think the flowpath through those inserts is about 1-1/2". They are a dual perf staggered core. The entrance into the muffler sections is a flat wall with a 1.5" opening into the core of the muffler. My 2.5" resonators would be as quiet as them, with probably 8x the CFM flow, & much deeper.
Sorry for yelling...my '74 was idleing next to me...!
Seriously, my everyday car is a '06 Dodge Dakota V6....and I listen to talk radio most of the time while I'm in it... When I'm in the Vette - no radio...I just wanna hear my SBC purr...loud is cool with me ! But then again - I'm a guitarst in a Blues/Rock band so.......LOL !
I would not mind the noise driving it every now and then but my brother is going to college about 4 hours away and he really wants me to finish the car and go over there so I think I would go insane listening to the engine for 4 hours nonstop but as far as the tranny goes I have not decided if I want to keep it automatic and try and find one that has overdrive or try and find a way to make it a manual 6 speed
so as far as the exhaust goes I think that having some sort of dual set up when in the instance I would run open headers it would go to the side pipes and in the instance i would run close headers it would run to the back for a normal quietish exhaust

I have two sets of the Boise Noise headphones and they work perfectly to cancel out the sidepipe noise. Yes...you can still hear the sidepipes but you can now very clearly hear the radio, cell phone, and your passenger talking to you. I used them twice on my 10hr (each way) road trip to my parents with my girlfriend. Yes..we looked like dorks with headphones on but we could carry on a normal conversation. When she started bitching I just took them off so I could not hear any more of her crap. They aren't cheap at about $200 each but they do work.
