Sidepipes look fantastic, and sound great for the 15 minute boulevard runs in the city, but the novelty wears off if you do any lengthy cross country trips.
After an hour or two of continuous burble, you'll feel like crap.
Excess noise really is debillitating... especially to old farts like me
I added a short glasspack between the manifold and sidepipe, that quieted it somewhat. When I swapped to an LS motor I used sidepipes from these guys, they're bigger and quieter.
Oh yeah, I went to an OD trans that droppedv my hiway rpm to about 2000. That helped too. http://www.sweet-thunder.com/corvett...pes_68_74.html
Depends on what you are using for a muffler in the pipes. I have STS baffles in my Hooker pipes. Sounds good at WOT, cruise is very comfortable and I can easily listen to the radio and carry on a conversation.

I started out with mine capped, but it seemed a little two quiet for my taste, so I drilled a 5/8" hole. I like the sound now. That's what really sold me on the STS . . . if you drill the caps out and it gets too loud, you can just weld closed and "recap".

Have the same setup on my 78'. Mine are capped plus I have the .64 OD too.
if my sidepipes start getting to me i pop in some ear plugs, they are fine around town but i drive my 80 a lot to work 130 to135 miles a day. you can talk and play your radio but after a while , well you know. love the sound!
well I may be doing the sidepipes with the sts baffles assuming I can find a video of the sound but if it is bearable I will be doing it because I love the look
EDIT: I found a video and it is still kinda loud but I think that if I put dynamat all through out the car (on the floor the doors and the t-tops) I should be fine

After dropping a couple of grand on the side pipes, just drop a couple more for a pair of sound-cancelling earphones! I seriously doubt that Dynamat will significantly reduce the low-frequency rumble of your sidepipes.
What about running two exhaust systems? Put a cut out in there and run sidepipes and under car. Flip switch to pick what you want. Would add some weight, but best of both worlds?
