Default Wrong Starter?

The TPI engine I'm putting in my '77 was originally attached to a 700-R4 transmission.....I'm using a 200-4R trans.....when I install the engine's original starter, it jams of the gears of the 200-4R & will not allow the engine/trans combo to turn over by hand.

Should I be using a starter out of a Camaro that had a 200-4R trans?

I may be wrong but the difference is in which flex-plate you use or it could be as simple as having to shim the starter a bit.
Good Luck,,,Peace, Moosie

I used the flex plate that came with the TPI engine & shimmed the started with the same shims that came under it.

---------------

So, I did some checking...my starter was on my '86 Corvette TPI engine when it was hooked up to the 700R-4 trans that was in the '86 Corvette as is my flex-plate.

The 200-4R transmission I've hooked up to my '86 TPI engine is out of an '88 Monte Carlo SS; cross-checking starters for '86 Corvette & '88 Monte Carlo SS shows that my starter should work with the 200-4R transmission also.

So, I'm guessing it has something to do with shimming

there are two different flex plates with a different number of teeth.....if shimming doesnt work look at the flex plate

the starter has nothing to do with the transmission.....only the flex plate.....if they are the same parts that came out of the 86 they should work fine

The starters are the same for autos or standards with a staggered bolt aluminum nose...automatics use a 168 flywheel or flex plate whatever you want to call it...and most starters do not need shims as it moves the teeth farther apart from the drive and the flex plate ring gear

Well, the starter was interacting properly with the flex plate in the '86 Corvette w/700-R4 transmission.....I kept the flex plate on the engine & it is on correctly.

Can't get a finger between the flex plate & Torque converter....yep, it's on properly.

When I broke the 700-R4 off the engine, there were 2 thin shims under the starter & I reinstalled them with the 200-4R.

Puzzling.
