I am going to talk to the guy who is going to rebuild my motor. It runs fine but needs a oil pan gasket and I thought that I would have it rebuilt and made a little stronger. Do you guys have any suggstions as to what all I should have done? He said that he would do a basic rebuild. I don't exactly know what that means. He also said that he would do any mods that I wanted.
If it runs fine, why do you want to do a rebuild? Why not just change the pan gasket, and have a complete check of the engine done? Compression check, leakdown test, etc.
If you wonder if it needs it or not, the compression test and leakdown test will tell you how good your rings and valves are. While the pan is off for gasket replacement, check the bearings. Might as well change the oil pump while your in there.
I have seen way too many engines that are sent in for rebuild that did not need it. I recently saw a 350 in for a rebore, it had no wear ridge on the cylinders and you could still see the hone marks in the cylinder. Maybe it needed honing and new rings, but not a complete rebuild.
If the engine is in good shape, then save the money of the rebuild and put the money into performance parts. A new set of aluminun heads $1000, a new cam and lifters $150, new intake manifold $120.00, a double roller timing set $40-60 and headers, You'll be way ahead.
These are just my opinions, others might disagree and offer good reasons for the rebuild, and they might be right, but this is what I would do.
Im with Smokehouse. If a compression test and a leakdown check ok, dont rebuild....unless you just NEED more cubes...lol. Anyway...spend the money on bolt on power parts...you will be much happier...I think anyway.
