Steering Column Drop Question
if it dosent remove the bolts in the firewall see how much room that gives you.
make sure your wires dont get in a bind when droping the column
on my 1980 the steering column came down some when i removed the upper bolts i do beleive.
When you take out the 2 bolts below the dash panel you'll probably get enough drop to get the dash pad out.
It's a GOOD idea to support the column and steering wheel while you work on the dash so their weight doesn't just hang on the lower column bearing.

whole column in about 15 to 20 minutes. I recently pulled my
column for some modifications that I made and found that removing
the whole column was very easy.
To do this, unbolt the rag joint, just the upper bolt that pinches it to
the column. remove the inter lock cable that runs from the column to the
transmission located at the fire wall, this will only be found on cars with an
auto trans. Then remove the two bolts at the fire wall from the inside
of the car and remove the back plate from the outside of fire wall, then
finally the two bolts under the dash. As you are removing this you would
want to unplug the connectors on the safety switch. Pull the column slowly
out while rotating slightly for the interlock arm to find its way through the
fire wall.
I know this sounds like a lot of work but its not that bad. It gets the column
completely out of the way so you don't have to worry about doing damage
to the column or even breaking any of the dash pieces, and it give you the
room you will wish you had if you didn't pull the column.
I hope this helps and makes things easy for you.
Riggs.
