I used to run a Donavan fixed idler gear drive in a 383 in my old vette. The problem you may have like I did is the lack of clearance between the gear drive housing and the reinforced ridge of the stamped steel block-off plate, on the back of your water pump.
There is no good reason to run a gear system on the street other than benching racing. They do have a very important roll in a true race engine though, such as engines with very high valve springs and driving such things as fuel pumps, power steering pump as well as magnetos and water pumps at 8500rpm+ and on and off the throttle hard all the time!
I couldn't make my choice from a sound off a utube video for anything.
I ran the $50 gear drive off Ebay and it worked perfect and timing never moved at all.
Its never going to stretch and they come with a locking plate and cam button.
But I had it on a real hotrod that wasn't going thru the bank drive thru window with.
I'll run another one as soon as I get another hotrod to build.
