Good news and bad news. The good news is that the previous owner of the car I recently bought put in brand new door panels. The bad news is that the car has std interior, and he put the walnut inserts on the doors.
Before i take the doors apart i figured i'd ask....how are inserts installed? If I want to take off the walnut, is there a way to salvage the door panels? I'm afraid they're screwed on or something which will mean I'm either stuck with the walnut or have to buy new door panels which is expensive and unfortunate because the ones that are on there are brand new.

You better leave them on, they and you are screwed.
I had the standard door panels on my 76 and wanted the deluxe door panels. So I bought the chrome trim/backing plate for the walnut (or teak for the 76) formica door panels, the chrome carpet trim and drilled holes in the standard door panel and converted the std door panels to deluxe. Also glued on the carpet strip along the bottom.
If you want to go to the standard door panel and you already have the walnut trim/backing plate installed, then I suspect you will have a set of holes in the door panels as the walnut panels are just formica glued onto a chrome trim/backing plate attached with screws from the inside of the door panel.
Hope this helps, I suppose you could sell your panels on ebay and then buy a standard set.

Why change them? Yes, they are a bit different than stock...but they are still 'stock' panels and they look good. Very few folks will know the difference. If you were going for a Top Flight Award, you might lose a few points over that difference. Otherwise, that difference isn't worth the trouble and cost of changing them out. Besides, a new [foam construction] panel may not fit all that well anyway.
