My alternator on my 1973 454 went out and I purchased a replcament from auto zone. The replacement does not seem to line up with the pully on the engine. Do I need to get a spacer or a different pully for the alternator. Thanks in advance for any help.
When I bought a replacement for my 72 454 the O'Reilley's manager swapped my original pully onto the new alternator.

PS, if that was your original alternator, why not have it rebuilt? I got mine done for $75.00 and they restored the case also. Plus, they were able to upgrade it from 63 amps to 100.
Oops, that should have been 61 amps.

Reason: Correction
Unfortunately it was not my origional and I did not realize that I needed to swap the pulley. Can I buy a pulley from someone that will line up?
You'll probably need to watch for a used one on ebay or on the parts for sale forum.
I recommend making sure you buy parts form someone who understands these old cars. Auto Zone is just a parts lookup/exchange store. They only know about ricers.
I don't think they "know" about any cars. I will buy 'odds & ends' from them, if no one else has a specific item. But, I never buy any replacement parts from them.

I have had horrible luck with Autozone starters and alternators. I always buy the Delco rebuilt from either Advance, O'Rieleys, or the local Delco store. It is worth the extra money, they do last better. I had an '89 IROC Camaro. Alternator went out. I went through a house brand rebuild evey 6 months for 3 of them. Finally got a Delco built and it went 2-3 years until I sold the car to an aquaintence, and is still there now-6 years later. It was a junky CS130, but that is another post.
