Default Big Block I.D. Help

Just picked up a used big block, seller says it's a 502, but I have my doubts. Anyone know how to tell before I get around to tearing it down? Block casting #12559110

It looks like it might be a Gen VII 496 - definately not a 502 though. It looks like (a bit hard to tell) there's a pipe running between the heads on the front of the block which is unique to the Gen VII series. A 502 was never a production engine. An easy way to ID a 501 is it will have this cast into the side of the block just below the deck:

If yours is a Gen 7 496 they are a tall deck engine. There's a guy who did one in a vette a while back with some sucess. But it takes some work.

Default info

I guess you are trying to be funny or maybe I should have been more specific. Are they both the same or is the other engines specs different. If so what is it and what does the difference mean for application in simple terms. What would the pros and cons be for each?
thanks

I just read 69Myway's thread and I'm exploring possibilities. The fact is I'm an old school small block guy, so I've got a lot of learning to do. But the devil hates a coward. Glad I picked it up cheap
(I think I have a 496)

Looks like you have a 496 truck "tall" block. That's important when your looking for heads, intake and I believe the pistons are different too...
