So my 75 vette squeeks and rattles alot what causes that? OK JUST KIDDING!!!
Actually, I have the rear end "Clunk" issue and a leak as it would appear as well. The leak is just a drip here and there and the Mechanic where I work (fire department) said it is the front pinion seal. Great... Anyway I really just need to add some fluid to the rear end to get by until I decide to fix the leak. So, the fill nut is square and nothing I own fits on it! Does anyone know what size socket you need to get that pig off of there?
I had a problem getting mine out, it was in pretty tight and I couldn't get an open end wrench in a position to put any leverage on it.
I picked up a set of crow's foot wrenches and was able to use a long extension on a rachet to get it out. The crow's foot's (feet??) have come in handy a couple times since.
I can't remember the size either, it's 5/8 or 3/4.
The cause of the first problem you mentioned is that your nuts are loose.
If the diff fill plug is corroded up (like most are), you will need to get it up on a lift or drop the spare and tub to get room for a breaker bar to generate enough torque to loosen it. Once you get access, a sturdy adjustable wrench will work on a 'male' plug; you need the right size square drive socket for a 'female' plug.

Good Luck!
I can't remember the size either but the crow's foot wrench was by far the best tool for this job. I have 8 point sockets too but as I recall it wasn't very accessible.
