Hi all, I've got a 71', good frame, needs birdcage repairs. I'm goona pull the body to do frame resto, susp. and paint, but I'll need to peel body front and rear sections from cage to access rust areas. Now, would I be better off peeling those sections off cage before removing from frame, or pull entire body from frame, and then disassemble from cage? I'm thinking pulling nose and tail, then removing cage from frame, what do you guys think? Thank you, Joe
Hi jmp,
I agree with Lars about lifting the body first, but I don't know if it makes too much difference.
I DO think you need to ask some people's opinions as to whether the birdcage needs to be, or should be, back on the chassis when the front and rear clips are put back together. I think that's more of an issue.
Good Luck with your PROJECT!
Regards,
Alan

When you install the front and rear clips, the bird cage should be on the frame and the front and rear clips then attach to make sure they align up exactly with your frame. They didn't do it this way at the factory, the complete body and frame were built before doeing th body drop to the frame. But they had precision jig to prebuild the body accurately, you dont.
Also, when you remove the front clip, keep in mind the possibility of removing and re-installing the inner wheel wells. If you're going to install a hood that's not the original, you might want to re-adjust the inner wheel wells to make the hood align up perfectly.
Hi 68/70,
I agree whole heartedly!
I did smile when I read FACTORY and PRECISION in the same paragraph.
In the late sixties and early seventies there didn't seem to be very much of the second at the first!

Thanks for the responses. Any particular reason for removing body first, like is there better access to some areas without the frame in the way? Or is it just the way you happened to do it? Thanks again, Joe
Hi Joe,
I guess you'd have total/easy access to all the underside bonding areas with the body off the frame. That's really the only advantage I see.

Alan
Oh, If thats the case, I'd do it that way. I was hoping to do it in sections, but if its easier on a dolly, thats the way to go. I'll have to get under the car and check it out carefully, thank you, Joe
