Engine ID help please.
Just bought my 69 and the previous owner said it had a 1970's LT1 motor installed at some point.
Just trying to figure out what codes i need and where they're at for someone on here to confirm or deny if he was telling the truth or i now have a pickup motor in it or something.
Only code i found so far was at the back of the motor on the driver side.

Mean anything? It also had a weird symbol at the end. Like a raised circle with a slash through it after the 9

Anything stamped on the stamp pad at the top right front of the block? 2 or 3 large letters which is the ID Code? Any numbers that are cast in will just be the casting part number and will not identify how the engine was machined.

I believe you're looking for a code on the stamp pad.
The right 3 letters would mean it was a LT-! engine that left the factory in a 70, 71, or 72 Corvette.
The previous owner could also have meant that an engine was built to LT-! specs and put in your car.
1970.... CTV, CTU, CTK
1971.... CGZ, CGY
1972.... CKY, CKZ

Note the 3 letter suffix on this 71, 350/270 pad. CJL The first part of the stamp indicates where ( V, Flint) and when ( 0107, January 7th) the engine was built. The other stamp on the pad indicates what car the engine went into at St. Louis.

Block has probably been decked (surfaces ground down).
The bad news: No way to ID it as an LT-1 block.
The good news: 0010 blocks are good blocks, and if it's been decked, it would mean at some point is has been rebuilt.
J309 would indicate the date. Either October 30, 1969 or October 30, 1979. In all likelihood a 350 block. I wonder if your car is a very late 69?

What should I assume it is?
Say i want to buy parts for it... are they all generic for 350 chevy engines? Or are some parts not going to fit unless i know exactly what it is?

All small block engines fom 70-72 were built from the 010 cylinder case.
So yes this block COULD have been a LT-! From the picture it looks like the only traces left for you MIGHT be 4 bolt main caps and forged internal components.

LT-1's are pretty rare compared to all the other 350 chevys in those years.. maybe not in a corvette block, but you don't know what that block is. there were tons and tons of 350 chevys in chevelles, novas, big chevys and trucks.. and yes also in corvettes.. it could be a LT-1 of course, but the overwhelming # of blocks were used as a standard 350. perhaps it was rebuilt in the past sometime with LT-1 Specs, that would trigger some past owner to claim it is a LT-1.. so maybe LT-1 in performance, but not in authenticity. you will never know until you tear it down to measure the compression, degree the cam, and look for the forged parts...
