Am curious if the tank on my '68 coupe is original. Here's a pic. Wish to know if tank sticker is on the car, but don't want to waste time pulling tank if I believe it has been replaced and unlikely has the sticker attached. I suspect if the tank were orginal it may not look this clean?? The car is all original (incl. paint) other than carpet. 89K miles.
The little bit of rust I can see on the rest of the picture makes it seem like the car was not out in the elements much. Gas tanks were made with coated steel so they didn't rust as fast as unprotected steel. I do see a little rust on the tank so it may be original.
Hi R68T,
My feeling is that your tank has been replaced.
Do you know that you can sometimes see the tank sheet by looking through the gas door and pushing down on the fuel neck gasket?
Here's a picture to show you the condition of a 46k tank, and a possible position of the sheet.
Good Luck in your hunt!
Regards,
Alan
Red,
I just took my tank off the frame, the very last part before it goes off for blasting and powder. I am going to replace it. if you find your is not original and want to replace it, I'll be selling this and a bunch of other original parts to be listed later.
Steve
Both my 68's had the sticker on the top left hand side(drivers side) when standing at the back of the car. As stated, if you get a small flashlight and push down on the rubber neck that is around the fuel filler you will be able to see it. A small double A battery light works well because you can wedge it between the deck and the rubber and really get a good look. The tank on my 68 BB was rust free and I thought it had to be a replacement, but to my surprise, the tank sticker was there! Just depends on how well the previous owner took care of the car.
Thanks for the info., I'll try the small flashlight in the filler neck tonite and report back.
Z068, would you happen to have the smog pump and brackets from your 68 for sale? This is the next part configuration I need to complete original restoration of my 68.
I could never see mine using the flashlight (and mirror) method. I did, however manage to reach up and at least touch it. Short arms won't work. If you try this method, just be very gentle because the paper is extremely fragile. Do not even think about trying to remove it without dropping the tank.

Red,
sorry, don't have that part. I will come up with a laundry list of the stuff not going back on soon.
I don't think the sticker is there. After pulling back the filler neck gasket, I could not see it w/ a flashlight. I then took a straightened clothes hanger and gently wisked the top of the tank to see if I heard any interruption in metal noise (paper). Nothing. So either tank has been replaced or sticker removed by previous owner(s). I have phone # of previous owner but not answering phone or returning messages. If any of you are from Salt Lake area (specifically Bountiful UT) and know of a current/past member of the Utah Corvette Club with a last name of Greenwood that previously owned a '68 red 400 hp coupe I'd appreciate knowing how I can get in touch.
