Default lower alternator bracket

I cant believe this **** keep going on and on? Its one thing after another with this car. I am not sure if Bubba did any work to this before me, but there is a gap between the alt and the rear of the bracket, i understand that. But what is the deal with too different size holes? Is the rear spacer also a bushing? and if so why would GM do such a stupid *** thing? Or has somebody modified this bracket for what ever reason.

Anybody have any ideas.

It is a 30 year old car isn't it? The technology of car building has improved some since then. [unless you drive a toyota]

Grumpy, if you can find any old Chevrolet alternator mount from that era, it should have the sleeve in it. This is what locks the alternator in position in the mount. You may have to trim it depending on your bolt length, but they all should fit.

Good luck... GUSTO

Default Sleeve

Hey Grumpy,
Ah, how did you get that nickname! Just kidding. Like Gusto said, basically its just a spacer. Any sleeve that will fit the hole and allow your bolt to pass through will work. Locks the alternator and prevents torque on bolt from cracking the cast bracket. I bought a car that was disassembled by Bubba, the assembly manual for my 1971 has been my best resource for my rebuild. Good Luck!

For future reference, your local ACE Hardware, and probably any well stocked hardware store, would have an extensive selection of bushings and sleeves which would satisfy your need.

Sadly our local hardware stores dont carry half the stuff they should. I have spend thousands of dollars in other provinces and in the USA getting things i need for cars and Bikes etc.

Looks good.

Make sure that the bushing will slide in the ear when you tighten the bolt.
It is designed to be floating, to tighten the bushing with the alternator housing and the front ear only, not the rear ear. This prevents the cast ears from breaking under a loose fit alternator.

The alternator on my newer DD use the same setup, must be a proven design.

Hey Grumpy...why are you getting so flustered with that thing? Doesn't really seem like something to get tooooo worked up over...I mean, it IS an old car and there are bound to be things like that that you will run into....just don't let it get you down. Looks like you came up with a good solution to the problem though!

And where did you get your Prozac fix?? I may need that sometime soon myself!!

grumpy...that spacer needs to "float" inside the hole, i don't think your new bushing will do the job , but it sure looks nice!...bwtfdik??
