Default 68' 427 fuel pump question?

i'm restoring my 68' BB coupe, and gettin ready to bolt on new fuel pump. i know that on small block chevys, there is a block off plate, and then another gasket, and then the fuel pump. but is big block different? is there just a gasket and fuel pump only? also, the fuel pump push rod i have is 5 3/4" long, is this correct? when i hold the new fuel pump up to the block, it doesn't seem to cover the entire flange area on the engine, is this right? thanks for any help. Rick

The BB's have a pipe plug under the fuel pump that allows the pushrod to come out. The flange on the pump is pretty well the same as the SB pump. IIRC the the lever is a little longer.
The gasket surface on the block is not an exact match for the gasket.
Pull that pipe plug, a wad of grease on the end of the pushrod to hold it up, pushrod in, plug in with a little thread sealer, pump back on.
It makes it a a bit easier if you can turn the engine so the pushrod is "up" all the way. If it's up, you don't have to fight the spring pressure of the pump to get it back on.

Don't forget to check the condition of the rubber line down there too= it gets plenty hot and rubber gets hard and can crack.

I think the two parts are the same - that we have interchangeable fuel pump push rods between small and big block... But don't rely on my perhaps faulty memory...check your own favorite engine rebuild book. I am going off memory of thinking I read that in my favorite - Tom Vizard's "How to Rebuild Your Big-Block Chevy."

The rods are the same, pumps are different.

Hi

The SB pump has a thin plate between the block and pump. The BB does not. At least, as far as I remember.

Actually, the pumps will physically fit both engines. The difference is in the flow specs.
