Default fan control help

Hey all, my fan only works on low speed in any position of the switch. If you put it between positions it sometimes goes to a higher speed. would it be the fan resistor that has gone bad, possibly the switch, or a relay? I have the whole center counsel out right now, so replacying the switch would be easy.

I doubt it is the resistor block, as when that died on my jeep it worked on high, but no other speed, this works in the same speed in every position,

Thanks,

Steve

In the positions between the detent points for the fan switch, you will get either the lower speed or the higher speed...depending on how the switch is manufactured. I'm not sure that is relevant, as that mid-position shouldn't be selected except as you are passing through it when changing speeds. I am pretty sure that with the original GM-made switch (40 years ago...not the foreign-made, GM-labeled parts you buy today) did not have any 'unusual' transitions between switch locations; it always changed from one speed to the next...it never 'hunted' for which speed to pick; the internal design didn't allow that. It may have been possible for the fan to not run at some point between two detent positions.

The fan switch has to be bad to have the "low" speed with all switch settings.

Just my two cents, before you spend money on parts, check your ground circuit. Grounds are very often overlooked and i've known of many people who have wasted money putting parts on without checking the basics. Usually when the resistor assembly goes south you only have high speed. The switch IS suspect, but it costs only your time to make sure your grounds are clean and well attached. Hope this helps.
