Default Tstat temp question:

What temp t-stat do you guys reccomend? Looks like mine is sticking open as of saturday. Kind of odd to look down and see the motor hovering around 150* after a couple hours of driving around.. lol.

The motor is a 383 with aluminium heads and an electric fan setup. The fan is wired always on (done by whoever had the car before I did) to a 15amp fuse.

you may also want to check the accuracy of your temp gauge in some boiling water.

I have a 185 t-stat in it at the moment, which was working fine. It would normally operate between 180*-200*. Noticed yesterday it was at about 190 for most the drive, then it just dropped to 150*. It never got back up to 185 for the rest of the day, even when idling for longer periods of time.
Usually when that happens, the Tstat gets stuck open. I'll test the temp gauge in some hot water tonight before I replace the themostat just to make sure though.

The fans should only come on when needed, not run all the time.

A 180 F thromostat should keep the oil above the boiling point of water, which is 212 F.

Thanks guys,
I put in a new 185* and tried it out. Looks like its operating back where it should be. Always nice when you can get away with a $4 fix
