Pulled cover on 80 vette differential. Found wear on cross shaft, 2 groves probably from halfshaft yokes rubbing it. Also keepers for clutch discs were slid out of place on the right side. the locking piece was broken. Any thought what would cause this and what would it take to fix? Thanks in advance for comments and suggestions.

Reason: forgot message
I spoke to Tom at Tom's diffs and the broken piece of the clutch pack is typical issue on these older style carriers. Looks like you will be in need of a rebuild now.
Thank's for the reply. Guess I will be sending it into V-Tech Vette for a rebuild. Sent them a trailing arm last fall. Haven't installed it yet but looked like they did a real nice job.
Is that VTech in Stillman Valley IL.? He did my trailing arms and did an excellent job, on time, on budget, quality work. He specializes in TA's and rear ends and had at least a dozen rear ends there when I went to his shop. He has a nice 64 race car in the trailer outside.
Yes, VTech of Stillman Valley, IL. Sent in my differential today by UPS. Pricing for rebuild service runs about the same as local shops. Just with talking with Gary, he gives the impression that he really knows corvette parts. Hope that I can install all those rear end and suspension parts before the summer car show circuit starts.
I just picked mine up from ProGear here in San Diego. Tried to save some coin by rebuilding myself but just couldn't set it up right so I took it to them. At least they didn't laugh at me when I brought it in. I did some of the work (new clutches/pin, carrier polishing). Got it back in only two days time. I'll have to install it in a few weeks.
I'm going to guess that your Carrier is probably torn up to. I bought a used one and it looked just like yours and it was. These Rear ends arn't worth all that much and sell pretty cheap these days. When you have it apart you might think about going to the HD Yokes with the 1350 U-Joints if you have a performace car.
Gary at V-tech did my T-arms, Great Quality work, Fast, and machined the spindles true for no rotor run out.
I read lately about using steel caps on the 80-82 dana`s in place of those aluminum ones. I would think that might help keep things in place better ? I replaced my side yoke seals, last summer and My center pin looked worse than yours, but I didn`t have much Yoke end play, maybe .030.

There is only one guy who machines steel caps for the Dana's, and he is located right here on the forum. Feel free to PM me if you would like more info.
