Pre-ignition/hesitation

Drove an L46 the other day that hesitated slightly thru each gear and after turning off it continued to cough and choke for a few seconds. Anyone comment on what the most probable cause of this is?

Normal causes would be weak mixture and/or advanced timing.

The most common cause for engine run on after switching the key off is having the throttle open too far.
A common reason for the throttle to be open too far is not having enough timing advance at idle, although anything that causes the car to idle slower could be at fault. (vacuum leak, fouled plugs, misadjusted valves, etc.)
