I am replacing my power steering lines this weekend in my 1980 auto. After they are done is there anything I need to do or worry about other than refill the system. Seems pretty straight forward.
Yeah be careful when you seat them on the assist valve. Mine leaked. i just got the valve and line replaced under warranty will try it again. Also make you you route them the same way and get full steering travel with out them pulling.
Don't overfill the pump and fill it without engine running. Front wheels should be off the ground and you should turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock (R & L) slowly so that the fluid fills the hoses, etc. After that, refill the pump, center the steering wheel (front wheels straight), then start the car. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock slowly several times again and center the wheel and turn off the engine. Refill pump if it needs fluid..but it probably won't.
This is when the 'balance' adjustment on the control valve needs to be made. Start the car, and if the wheels turn one way [or the other] by themselves, then the balance adjusting nut needs to be turned to neutralize that effect. The nut is under the little stainless steel cap on the outer end of the control valve. Pop the cap and use a nut-driver or small ratchet and socket to slowly turn the nut. The technique is to turn it one direction until the wheels just start to turn on their own. Now, turn the nut the other way...and watch exactly how much of a turn you make to the nut...until the wheels just start to turn the other way. To balance the system, back the nut off exactly 1/2 of the amount you last turned the nut--in the opposite direction {split the difference}. You should now be ready to go!

That's about it
Hardest will probably getting them off without rounding off any bolts.
Thanks for the replys got the old lines off last weekend with little probelm- thankfully my whole front end of the car leaks some fluid or another so everthing is greased nicely
Haven not had a chance to fill and balance yet- try this weekend
