Default Re-build options

Ok, new to the site and Corvette's. My relatively "new" C3 needs a rebuild. I want the car to perform, but I don't need a drag car either. Have heard that the newer vortex heads will bolt up and with a proper manifold for the Quadra jet and medium performance cam will make a nice increase in power? The current engine is original "numbers matching" with a slight rod knock and a flat cam lobe. Am I better off using the stock heads or is the vortex option the way to go? Any and all input is greatly appreciated, hope to get it right the first time. Thanks, Al.

I am hoping you get plenty responders as I am in the same situation. 31.5k original miles. the motor sounds awesome-no knocks, pings, taps, etc. it sounds and runs like new. I am at an impass on wether to chageout to a mild crate & store the original engine, or modify the orig motor with vortec heads, a mild cam, manifold, etc.,etc...
just would like to hear a few educated opinions....

I would tear the engine down and take the shortblock to a good machinist.
have the Crankshaft inspected and turned. Bores cleaned up and pistons replaced with some to get you 9.3:1- 9.7:1 CR. with a .015" or up to .035" gasket. The Machinist will let you know what Kind of CR youll get with the new bore , pisons and gasket thickness. Shoot For 9.5 or a little more, remember 10:1 is still Plenty good for no detonation especially with aluminum heads. Ideally your looking for .040 quench ,(research quench if your not sure of that part of The Combustion Factors. A good machinist will share knowlege with his Customer!
Then
Edelbrock performer manifold
Brodix IK 180 heads 64cc chambers 170cc runners.
A ~.488"-.503" lifting Camshaft (More research when you get to the top end).
New MSD Dist. and 6A Spark Box
Rebuild The Quad. It will be plenty of Carb.
This engine will have lots of lowend Grunt, it will roast a set of 235/60/15's and Should Cruise at 3Krpms @ 70mph.

Take the original out. Put on engine stand. Install new engine.
