Default Torque Value - Spindle Nut?

Just double checking - it's not in the AIM. 125 ft/lbs is correct?

Allow me to be the first one today to (nicely) call you a tool... LOL

I was talking about the rear... it's all done and pinned now so it better be 125 ft/lbs.

Cod forbid you have to strain those poor wittle fingers and type in both numbers if in doubt. Instead we get to take the conversation to a couple more posts.

Now if I had said front; You, knowing I have a late '68, would then be asking me if mine has the 1968 or 1969 front spindles - right?
I see how this works now....

Hi W,
WELL smarty... the 71 AIM lists it at 100 Ft/lbs, PLUS the torque neccessary to line up the cotter pin hole!
Regards,
Alan

Sorry......... I couldn't resist.
Now that they are together at 125 I suppose I should just leave them? I got the 125 number out of an old issue of Hot Rod magazine - ala Gulstrand.
I could not find any number in my AIM - considering the T/A's showed up fully assembled to St Louis - I'm surprised your AIM mentioned them at all too?

slip fit it all and toss the spacer. The nut goes on just a little more than finger tight, just like the front.

that's what i was told. Re packing my bearings and am going through this same thing. Just haven't tightened the nut yet but i've packed the bearings.

I was told you get it on finger tight. Then you spin the wheel as you tighten the bolt till the wheel stops moving and then back off a tad. Do that a few times to get the feel of where it's too loose and too tight and slap the cotter pin in the middle.

Nice try to open THAT can of worms again.

But if the front nut doesn't even have a torque value per se, then why would Alan have been confused if I meant "front or rear"?

Hi,
The CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL indicates in the Maintenance and Adjustment section to use 12 lbs/ft for the front spindle nut. But then it gets interesting... it says to LOOSEN until you get to a flat you can insert the cotter pin through. In the Specifications section in the back of the book there's a general note that says to always attain the specified torque and the TIGHTEN to the cotter pin hole.
So I guess it does matter if you're working on the front or rear spindle.
Regards,
Alan

GM service manual: When the rear bearings are being installed...after being set-up... the installation press tool is tighten to 100 lbs/ft of torque. After the press tool is removed...install the washer and nut and the spindle castle nut is tightened to 90 lbs/ft and then turned to the next castlation so the cotter pin can be installed.
