Default Another A/C question

Hey guys before I start tearing into the old A/C unit(71) I thought I might try putting a shut off valve in the heater line. I have done a search and can't seem to find which line is the inlet.

The line on the manifold or the line on the water pump at about the 8 O'clock position.

I charge the unit late yesterday.....the temp was around 72 and I got the Air down to 59 degrees. I pulled off my lines and had a leak at the low pressure port valve.......did not have a cap so I just left it until today.

It lost most of the pressure overnight so I drove to the auto store and bought the R12 to 134A adapters, I like the quick disconnects. On the way home I check the temp with my dig temp gage.....115 degrees at the vents....on a bright sunny day of 80 .

After charging I could only bring that 115 down to 71. I would like to keep some of the hot water from the core before I start throwing parts at it. A few years ago I rebuilt the entire interior and that included the heater box, all new door gaskets, vacuum valves, firewall gaskets ect, and sealed every seem inside and out with rtv.......she is as air tight as it can get.

Do I need 1 Valve or 2 and again which line is the input. !!!opps forgot it a 454 BB just in cast it matters, and as always how big of a hammer do I need.... hehe.

The line coming off the manifold is the line in to the heater core, I only put a valve in that one, works good. Did you indicate that you mixed r134a with the r12 or did you do the proper conversion?

I put valves in both lines. The water in the outlet will get warm and add heat to your heater core even if it does not circulate.

Thanks guys thats what I needed to know.......I have the valve and did not want to guess at the inlet line.

I used ES12a it is compatible with r12 and r12 oil. I have been using this in my daily driver cars for over 10 years.

As to the 71 degrees.......OMG my wife and I took a dinner cruse this evening about 6pm it was 82 degrees outside temp and the a/c vent temp went to 47 degrees..........my wife complained she was cold and her feet were freezing, and wanted the air shut off. NO way was I shutting off the air I have been cooking in this car for the 6 years I've owned it.

I guess the stock fan was not pulling enough air over the condenser at high idle to go below 71, at road speeds she was cold.

I have not used the A/C.......since I bought her....She always had a low pressure charge, but not enough to start the compressor.

I just kept fixing other things first.........I thought before I started an A/C restore project(like all the others) I would throw a charge at her and see what happens. I gave her an oil charge and 3 cans of ES12a, the compressor start was hard...it squealed the belts for a few seconds, then all was well.

I really should have flushed her out, and still might.

Thanks again on the heater inlet line info.
