Anyone have a tech article or good link for step by step windshield replacement? Looks like taking off outside side channels, top moulding, and using a wire to cut through old gasket material. Then reversing the steps. Anyone have experience with this repair??? Thanks for your help. Peter
Hi p,
The only things I'll add is to be very careful about cleaning ALL the old sealer off the window frame so the new sealer has a good surface to bond to, and to check the condition of the trim clips along the top of the windshield frame, (if 77s have them), since this is your only chance to replace them if needed.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks for the reply Alan. you seem familiar with the job. Is it as stright foward as it seems....unscrewing the trim pieces, side and top and cutting through the old sealant to remove glass. Then clean all areas well, check the clips as you suggest, lay a new bead of sealant and then re-set the glass?? Sound about right. Thanks again for the response.
Hi Peter,
Here's a link you may find helpful for you windshield installation.
It's a good idea to check the thickness of the new glass compared to the original so you can space the glass correctly so the trim fits quite snuggly to the glass surface.
Here's a picture of the windshield installation on my 71. It's the passenger's side a-pillar, about half way up. It shows a foam damming strip that St.Louis used but most people don't bother with. It controls the 'squeeze' of the sealer so it doesn't ooze out onto the glass where you can see it.
