I have the motor out of my 81 and today I put on a new torque converter. Problem is I do not know if it's on all the way. Should the converter spin freely when its on all the way? I can spin the converter and it will rotate a full turn before stopping, is this normal? I have tried everything to get it back more but to no avail. When I look up from under the car there is about 5/8 of an inch before the converter hits the bell housing. Thanks for any help.
I would remove the converter and put some ATF in it. To instal it hold the conv. with one hand and try to spin it as you put it in it should be back a little from bell housing and spin freely

The converter is difficult to get back where it's supposed to be if its your first time. I hold the **** in the center up a little then spin the converter and wiggle at the same time until it "plunks" into place. If you take it out and look at the end you will see the notches, those notches have to engage the lugs in the pump. Once you get it in once and hear the "plunk" you won't have any problem the next time you do it.
Thanks guys, I off to Brooklyn, NY now to visit my daughter, I tomorrow morning I will be back out in my shed playing with the converter. Have a great weekend.
