Default Wiper override switch question.

So my wiper override **** was broken on my 69 i'm fixing up.

I was able to change the blades once with pliers and the **** worked. Then after that i was unable to use pliers any more.

SO i figured it was just a normal on/off switch so I replaced it with a standard automotive toggle switch.

The blades still don't work anymore and the only thing i can think of that's changed is that switch.

Didn't know if there's something i'm missing or assumed that was wrong?

Problem must not have been in the old switch. Do you have power on both sides of the switch ?

I'll have to check today if there's power to both wires that go to the switch. There is supposed to be power on both sides?

Are the wipers vacuum assisted or is the motor the only thing that moves them? I just can't see how they were working perfectly until i tried to change the blades and now they don't work at all....

Do modern wipers fit as it seems like the Bosch ones i got are too tall...

Is the wiper relay up near the wiper motor the exact same relay down by the headlights?

Hi PV,
I'll try a couple of your questions:
Turning the wiper switch **** COUNTER clockwise should stop the wipers. The 68-69 switch and the 70-72 switch are different in appearance but work the same.
The vacuum relay used for the wiper door and headlight doors is the same part.
The action of the wipers is only electrically powered, no vacuum assist.
Regards,
Alan

The switch in the off position interrupts the power so you can change blades = power on only 1 side. In the on or normal position power will pass through the switch so it should have power on both sides.

The wiper motor is not vac assisted. The wiper door is operated by vacuum. I'm guessing but you might have disturbed the wiper door power switch, its the switch that the door pushes to tell the motor its ok to come on. Its mounted behind the dist on the firewall.

Most blades will fit fine, not sure about the Bosch blades.

The wiper door vacuum relay is the same as the HL relay , sometimes mounted on the firewall and sometimes under the passenger fender.

edit - Allan got a couple,I'm a slow typer !

Thanks for the tips guys.

I'm replacing vacuum lines today as i had a small leak that seems to be fixed now. I'm replacing them all anyway as they were pretty hard and crusty.

I'll definitely have to look at the wiper door switch as maybe that's why the blades aren't coming on.

I'm pretty sure i didn't blow a fuse but can i just wire the override switch wires together to eliminate that factor for right now?

The wiper door definitely opens enough to contact the motor switch.

What's the best way to test the switch and the wiper motor to make sure they're still functioning?

The Willcox site has a complete test procedure ,I'll post a link for you in a min.
For now test the red wire going to the wiper motor for power, if this is hot then the bypass, wiper switch circuit is OK.
Get your wiper door up, turn key to on ,make sure red wire is hot, make sure yellow wire in center of 3 wire connector at motor is hot, now ground the lt blue wire next to the yellow-wipers should run. If it doesn't run ground both the lt blue and the lt green. Let us know.

Punisher-

Check the new switch for power on both terminals with the switch off.. if only on 1 side, then check it with the switch on. Next move to the limit switch with your new switch in the on position. You should have power going in the limit switch and with it depressed this power should pass to the motor.

Both the over-ride and the limit switches are interrupts for the wiper motor. One is for service as Roger mentioned above and the limit keeps the motor from starting if the door is closed.

Yeah i found that guide on my own and started to do the trouble checks.

I got all the way to making sure there is power to the motor.

I then started trouble shooting the ground at location 4. I had a ground at the top of the motor that i didn't see in any of the photos on that site but also haven't tracked down the #4 ground to see if it's in the right spot.

I think i'm going to just take the motor out for cleaning as well as checking the wiring as some of the wires are starting to get wear spots from rubbing.

I developed a caliper leak that distracted me today and will take a higher priority in fixing for now. But i really appreciate the help from you all.

#4 ground is the one at the top that the black wire connects to.

That's kind of what i was thinking. I made sure it was grounded, mine actually went to a screw on the vacuum system actuator over on the passenger side.

Whatever that was it still didn't work so i guess i need to start trouble shooting the actual motor...

Hard for me to believe that the motor would be bad after just seeing it work perfectly minutes before i changed the blades.

O and i forgot to mention i just wired the override switch wires together to eliminate that from being a potential problem.

If just for testing, run a ground from the engine to the motor for a quick check. Doing this will assure you there is a ground on the motor. I think you have knocked something off the motor and with the pages you should be able to figure it out pretty easy.

Post again if not.
