Default Oil for new engine

Can anyone suggest an oil weight for a newly rebuilt engine. Also is there anywhere on the net on the procedures for starting a new motor. All I know is run it at 2500 to 3000 rpm for 20 minutes.

10w40 should work just fine...I would run the motor in as you described

Tony
My rebuilder uses Penzoil 15w40 after his rebuild's.
I used that for about 700 miles and went to Amsoil 10w40.

Is 700 miles a good break in period for a carbed vehicle?

Some say 500,700,1500+miles.
Lots of opinions.
My guy is well known as a performance engine rebuilder and has been in business for over 25 years.
He said about 500 is fine for the synthetic change over.

I have always heard not to put synthetics in an older style engine. Are you running synthetics in yours?

My engine builder recommends 15/40W also. I use Valvoline. Whatever the breakin, make sure the rings are seated prior to changover to synthetic oil. car should not be using significant oil and smoking should stop. 1000 miles is good.

I've got a while before I make that decision but I'm glad to know that it was a myth. Maybe they meant no synth's on an old high mileage engine.

Right, Tony. The reason that synthetics are avoided in high mileage engines is because of the smoother consistency of the molecules. It's much easier for a synthetic molecule to slip through a small hole and leak, while the thicker conventional oil has a tendency to act as its own stopgap, pretty much.

Thanks Steve. One last question (I promise) why do you wait 1,000 miles before using synthetics? Why not start using them right away. Someone told me the modern Vettes come with synthetics from the factory.
