Default Ganey please.

I may actually be ready to do a cam swap soon on my L=36 427 bb. Your recommendation was for me to use the XE268 I believe. Just to satisfy my curiosity would you compare the XE274 and the Magnum 270H to the XE268?

I'm curious as to how the engine would run with the Magnum as it is a single pattern (old style?) vs. the Extreme Energy versions.I originally was wanting more low end power so I went with the Crane H-272 w/.216/.228 &.515/.510 & 112LSA. It is great on the low end but I now want more mid-range. Please bear in mind my stock intake must stay and is pretty much finished by 5400 rpm or so.

Reminder on my car: Comp ratio: approx 9:7 to 1, 4 spd. no power anything, no a/c. Low rise aluminum intake w/quadrajet, headers added soon going into true duals (2&1/2") w/ X-pipe. Heads are 2.06/1.72 large oval port w/minor porting.Cu. In. approx. 433" (.030 over the 4.25" bore)

Thanks again Ganey!!!

regards,Mark :flag :chevy

Mountainmotor, I will replace the single springs in there that came with the Crane cam kit with whatever the new cam recommends. Engine builder said clearances from piston to valves was a bit tight (I didn't write down the #'s DOHH!!) and to not get too wild with lift (no more than .600 to be safe). Comp cams retainers were used. Rocker arm clearance at full lift is fine. TRW 2300 forged slugs: slight dome but pretty heavy. Yes, want to keep Q-jet. Oh, rear-end gear is 3:36. I'm not opposed to a solid cam either as I don't drive it all that much. Just don't want to go the roller cam route.

Thanks, Mark

Mark

Many are happy w/ 270H or XE268 w/ setups similar to yours. Cams are 110LS & 224 intake w/ XE having more ex. duration. For what you want- low & midrange as you have said, then XE274 is too much.

Evidently Mountainmotor had a comment, he can cam as well.

Yep I deleted.

Asked what the springs are, retainer to guide seal clearance and what piston.

Also said that our Bud Ganey had not posted in a while, that he must be on vacation busy Killing the Fords

Marky, .600 is too much imo.Especially if intake centerline is 104-108. I think .540 with the intake on 110 would be pushing it.Should be checked carefully. That is the one TRW piston besides the flatop 2307? that I have never used.

Thanks Ganey and Mountainmotor. Please answer a few more questions for me.

In regards to the 270 having the same duration on both intake and exhaust: Is this "old" camshaft technology? How would the motor's idle and how it produced power in the mid-range compare to the "split" duration style of the XE-268?

Finally, is there any harm in installing a camshaft either 4 deg retarded or 4 degree advanced (depending on need) as far as possible valve interference is concerned?

Edit: Re: the intake centerline, not real familiar with this. On the Crane spec sheet it says 107 centerline. What is it that you watch out for? Is a 105 better for low lift cams than a 110 or is the opposite true?

Many thanks, Mark

Can of worms opened. Sorry, but was looking at Comp Cams catalog and noticed that the 270S (solid/flat tappet) has same duration as 270H but more slightly lift: .530/.530, than either the XE268 or 270H. Would this be a possible candidate? I don't drive it all that much so adjusting the valves is not too much of an issue. How do you think this cam would perform compared to the others mentioned?

thanks, Mark

MarkyMark, Just a point of information what are your rear gears ? I have a L36 also & considering cam switch next winter & as I have a 308 was going with the XE262 or high energy 278.. for the rpm range of 1300 to 5600 , as my block was decked & 1.72 roller rockers, have zero deck height & was going to be consevative on valve lift ...also the Weiand 8013 action plus will fit under a big/block hood, rpm range idle to 6,000
