Default wiper door again

Thought i was on to something, wrong.at first when i start my 69 350 wiper door opened then closed. Now i checked my regular wiper switch when i push it to the right the door opens and thats all no working wipers. If i turn the overide switch the wipers start working. The pass side wiper arm is making full contact with the ? switch. I have a new vacuum filter and a new check valve, i have pinched off the small line to the wiper system and the door stays closed there is no leek that i can find at the moment, any other sugestions. Thanks firstvett69

Default wiper door/headlights

I had not noticed before but when i start my 69 350/350 the wiper door opens and then closes,i just now noticed that the headlight also open, but not all the way and then they close also. I dint see them before so this changes things. The switch on the pass side wiper arm has 3 vacuum lines coming off one of them is open, is this a vent for that vacuum switch? does not look like it has ever been hooked up to anything. Everything wipers and lights worked fine 3 months ago. And as i said in an earlyer post when i turn the wipers on the door opens but thats it to get the wipers to work i have to turn the overide switch on, then the wipers work. what up. car idles fine, I plug off the vacuum at the manifold and there is no change of idle. If i had a leak the idle would increase yes, no maby. Any suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks firstvett69.

Hi 69,
The wiper over-ride should always be turned 'on'. It's used to stop the wipers in the position they are when the over-ride switch is turned to 'off'. If the over-ride switch is turned while the wipers are parked they stay parked no matter what you do with the wiper switch.
See if this is the situation you're seeing.
Regards,
Alan

PS: Have you gotten a trouble shooting guide and vacuum pump with gauge so you can begin to test the individual components? That's the way you can track this down without just replacing parts until you replace the one causing the problems.

If your getting a lift/close of all vacuum systems, I would look at the check valve going to the intake manifold vacuum port, it is probably leaking. The resivor tank should hold 8-12" of vacuum after shut-down, I'll bet yours will show none if you connect a guage to one of the outlet ports and test it.

Alan, If I remember right you rebuilt your entire wiper door assembly. I'm sure everything is all snugged up and working great. After the rebuild would you say the door picked up a resistance to movement from the actuator ? I've noticed when these doors are old they are very loose and move very fast and have little resistance. I can't help but think this is aggravating this quick lift/close of the wiper door on start up.

Hi Roger,
I really didn't rebuild the mechanism 'mechanically', just 'cosmetically'.
I did find that after serious cleaning the operation was 'stiffer' until I put some white lithium on the pivot points.
Regards,
Alan

I have a second linkage that I bought to steal a couple of parts from and yes, in it's original state, it moves VERY easily.

Oh solid LT1 i have already installed a new check valve when this first started, not that. thanks again all. Ill keep screwing around untill i find it got to get a good vacuum pump mine is bad havent had to use it in 25 years lol. So its like the vette dosnt want to work wright its to old also. I just replaced the check valve on my 71 350/270, and now I have this problem. When I first start the car, the wiper door opens & closes (just a little bit). I put the old, leaky check valve back in, problem solved. Any suggestions?

Also, can someone please instruct me how to adjust the wiper actuator to get the wiper door to open all the way? My door needs a little push, after the actuator does its thing.

Thanks

I also had the problem that when I started the car the wiper door and lights would go up then down. Everything was tested or new, but still had the issue. I finally found it, my vacuum advance was not working and would not hold any vacuum, so that was where the leak was. It all works much better now.
