Default Need Help! Under Dash

Breif story. My uncle has a 68' that has been his pride an joy for years. Its a Cherry on the inside and out! He used to auto cross it back in the 70's, always trailering it and keeping it safely tucked away in the garage. The car hasnt run in years as my uncle hasnt had time or the heat takes its toll on him. Everytime I'd come to my uncles house over the past 5 years er so, we'd work on it together. My Uncle just had a heart attack and I came up to help aid his recovery.

Well, heres the problem. Prior to his heart attack, My uncle had Identified a vaccum leak against the firewall on the inside of the car. There is a kid in my uncles neighborhood who has a father-son ol' 69' Camaro project car. Being that this kid is a "know-it-all" and talked a big game. My uncle had the kid come over and start pullin stuff from under the dash in search of this vaccum leak. The air damper box control valve (dual-diaphram) was replaced and then the kid dissappeared.... leaving the under dash components strone about. I could probably piece it together as all that I have to my aid are the Factory service manuals. Even then.... ouch!..

BUT!!! I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY AND ALL THE UNDER DASH PICS THAT U MAY HAVE TO HELP AID THE PROCESS! Please please please! its all center console and passenger side. Driver side hasnt been touched.

Purchase the '68 assembly instruction manual (AIM). The AIM is not a how to, but shows how the cars were assembled at St. Louis. There are several pages of AIM diagrams showing the dash and center cluster installation, wiring, etc. Ditto for the console and ebrake console.

My '68 convertible has the dark blue interior.

Good luck.

I was skimming through his ol books. He has that one. I didnt even realize that was the one i was lookin through (it was replaced in a binder). It is a very big help indeed. However some of the sketches are faded. If someone could pull off that passenger side pannel right quick... well, A picture or two would help emensley in providing color and depth and helping my ID what components are oriented accordingly.

Thank you for you insight tho! Much appreciated!

Hi K,
Here are 2 pictures from my 71.
The 2 circled areas in the first picture are the 2 vacuum actuators on the heater/defroster box. The 2 vacuum lines from the console controller run to those actuators.
The second picture shows the location of the convector for the radio that's laying on the floor.
I hope this helps a bit.
Regards,
Alan

PS: Now a favor... I'd love to have a couple more pictures of the 'jute' insulation that on the forward most part of the transmission tunnel. I'd like to see it from both sides.

Default 68 gonna be different

I am really new here so if I am misinformed I please beg your pardon. But I have just acquired a really nice '68 and from what I have learned so far it is going to drive you crazy with one only year parts and mechanics. Actually, the frustration with these mechanics are exactly what makes this car seem special to me. Call me a masochist. Anyway, I think you'll find the vacuum hoses, actuator location and other components for the wiper door system anyway in completely different locations and possibly different functioning than on any other year car.
That said, Wilcox has been fantastic with thier online help sections(search their website, and but some parts from them too, very high quality and good pricing, well worth it just from what I have learned there.
I'd send you some pictures but its in the shop for wiper door problems!!!! LOL

Best to you...Hope your uncle recovers and you can ride out together.

Jimmy

Thanks Alan,
For whatever reason I have noticed some major differences in the placment of things when compared to your 71'. Those two big actuators are actually in different locations. The radio... part... not the tuner but the other assembly thats connected to the radio and mounts under the dash (on your car, its the unit in the second picture thats mounted to the top corner of the frame). On this car, that assembly is like 2-3 times as large and mounts more centrally. I didnt realize the 68' was quite special.

Still! Thank you very much. I've been able to pin and place most of the ducting successfully. I'm getting more grief just trying to make sure the right screws get used where they're needed.

As much as I would like to grant your request, on the insulation, I'm afraid my uncle has long since had that stuff removed. When he got his carpet redone, he had some sound deadening put in undernieth to take the edge off. If there is anything else u need pics of, dont hesitate to ask.
Thanks again.

I'm still in need of pics if anybody has a 68' under dash pic.

Stereo. It's in the AIM radio/stereo section, and called a convector assembly. Mono cars had one output transistor in a heat sink per Alan's picture. Stereo cars had two transistors (left and right channels) in a larger heat sink. U79 Stereo option section in the back of the 68 AIM shows the installation

The area/stuff behind the passenger's dash pad in a '68 isn't much different than what you find in any 69-82. The only less common feature I can recall is that the flasher mounts in a bracket on the back of the pad.

...I didnt realize the 68' was quite special....
We '68 owners have always known that.
