My 73 has a heat shield at each side of the engine, at the front sloped area of the floor boards, which is stock for most years of that era. If that is what you mean.
Rock shields huh, Ok. I wonder if a layer of insulation can be put in between the shield and the floor board. Im trying to do heat control without pulling the carpet right now.
The only way to insulate for heat is to put a heat insulator under the carpeting. The sound deadener material will quiet your ride, but it won't reduce the heat [although it may slow it down a bit].

Ok not sure where sound deadner came from. I was thinking of putting a layer of heat insulation between the floorboards and the rock shield. As long as its between your feet and the exhaust pipes does it really need to be under the carpet.
Just did my 68 w/ side pipes.I first wrapped the E pipe from the manifold back to the muffler as it went right below my feet and was terrible. I the got self sticking heat reflective material and stuck it directly to the floor boards from underneath between the rock shields and the floor. The previous owner fastened insulation to the top side of the shields which left a gap and air space between the insulation and the floor and it didn't do squat for heat reduction. Don't forget to put heat shield over top of transmission as there is also a lot of heat transfer from it. I would safely say this method reduced my heat problem by 50 to 60%.
My 69 has them and all i hear when at a stop light is one of those darn things rattling.
I haven't had time to mess around in that area yet but I'm pretty sure i saw one was attached with a zip tie....
Are these shields really needed? I'd like to lighten the car up as much as possible if i can eliminate them. Maybe i can spray some undercoating on the bottom of the fiberglass to help with the rocks?

My 77 came with no shields, but a metal floorpan with the angled firewall still being glass. Pass side had a hole it in from something thrown up.
