soooo I contracted the " while you are at it " bug and decided if I am doing a total repaint I should remove the windshield trim and pray and hope that it is not a complete rust bucket. I pealed away the 38 year old worn out and crusty weatherstripping. Started prying away at the trim and reveal molding and checking and rechecking the AIM. Got it all off and removed and it all was really in nice shape. PLUS I didn't break the windshield as so many of you have warned! So my question is this... what do I do now? I clean it all up after removing the windshield strip it down to the bare metal, use some sort of stripper/ rust preventer and then paint it right???? Maybe epoxy spray it ? Also what all do I need to order to reinstall the windshield? New clips and screws I am guessing. I will try to get some pics up tomorrow morning....
there is some pitting in the upper driver's side corner and in the center just above the windshield but it is surface rust and should clean up easily. There is nothing really showing in the interior/ underside of these pieces. For some reason everything has a red tint to it in the pics but it was all taken with my iphone. Anyways, I am going to pull the windshield clean it all up, then seal and paint.
Looks good. Get a helper to get the windshield out. If you can get a couple of those glass suction handles, it would help assure no breakage.
Frame looks good. Clean it all out with the glass out and if no real damage, put some rust converter on the existing surface rust [to prevent further rusting] and/or prime it with zinc chromate self-etching primer, then paint it.
Put new seal in and reinstall glass. Get the stainless trim all buffed up (professional shop, if you don't have the equipment or knowledge...not expensive) before you reinstall it.
Where ever the seal is going to be in contact with on frame clean right to bare metal. Then use the etching primer as stated above. Then let it cure for about a week before placing windshield back in. I had a Guy R&R My windshield, and a budy weld new header bar in. It looked like brand new after He was done.
