Default '71 LT-1 Distributor position question

Recently had short block rebuilt and builder returned car with ingniton sheilding re-installed "****-eyed". He had put right side sheilding support on last bolt of manifold instead of second bolt. I moved the support but now it hits directly on vacuum advance on distributor! I'm unable to connect vacuum line. I suspect that distributor is not "indexed" correctly on manifold. I cannont recall the position of the distributor before disassembly....should vacuum be positioned behind sheilding (10 o'clock looking straight down on engine) strut OR in front
(7 or 8 o'clock) of the support??? I have looked in assembly manual but it is unclear. Any of you fellow C-3 LT-1 guys know? Or can look at yours? Thanks in "advance",
Jerry

If I'm following you correctly, then about 7:00. If the tach cable is going in pretty straight you should be in the right spot.

The original factory-installed position was with the vacuum advance control unit poking out in front of the shielding at about the 7 o'clock position. It was soon realized that this put the tach cable in a heckuva bind on the C3 bodystyle, so a Service Bulletin was issued to rotate the distributor 45 degrees clockwise and move all the plug wires over 1 tower position. This made the vacuum advance control unit stick out just behind the shielding at about the 9 o'clock position.

For photos of the correct installation and a copy of the SB you can e-mail me for a copy of my "Distributor Installation" paper.

Hi,
Here's a picture of a 72 engine showing the distributor in the position Lars indicates. The 'can' is to rear of the shield support.
Regards,
Alan
