I'm heading up to the vette show in Carlisle tomorrow and unfortunately I need to buy a new carburator. I will be buying a stock Q-jet. Does anyone have any advice on buying one from a vendor at the show? I was told not to buy one at the show in case there is something wrong with it. I would think a reputable vendor would stand by their product. Any advice is appeciated. Thanks.
If there is a vendor who is selling new Q-Jets at Carlisle, they will likely have a warranty on it (in case something is defective in the hardware or the assembly of it). Otherwise, you will have to buy a "core" unit from a salvage vendor and rebuild it. That can be problematic if there are damaged/worn parts in the core that need to be repaired and/or replaced. You can't just go down to NAPA and buy individual components for a 40 year-old Q-jet. If you don't want to 'fool' with the carb yourself, buy one that is 'new' or newly rebuilt by a reputable rebuilder.
I suggest that you send an e-mail to Lars "Q-Jet" Grimsrud [at V8FastCars@msn.com]. Explain the circumstances of your existing carb and ask his advice on how best to obtain a well functioning carb to re-install on your car. Options are 1) buy new (if they are available), 2) buy a core and rebuild it yourself, 3) buy a core and have someone else rebuild it, or 4) just rebuild your existing carb. Lars knows all of the issues around those options and may offer you some good advice on how to proceed. Good luck, whichever way you decide to go.
