just about finished with engine bay clean up and paint. Anyone have a helpful trick for restoring the alternator and the power brake booster. They are original and I would prefer to keep them. Both are clean but look as old as they are.
If the alternator has some years of use, it could probably stand to have the 'internals' rebuilt. Then, while you're doing that, you have the opportunity to clean the housing, spray with Seymour aluminum paint for exhaust manifolds....then bake it to a hard, durable ceramic paint finish. It will look like new for many years.
The alternator is pretty easy to disassemble. New diodes, etc can be obtained at NAPA or auto parts store.
I rebuilt the internals of mine then bought a chrome case, pulley and fins for it. I may have spent more than a new one was worth in the long run but I wanted to keep the original design.
Hi m,
The alternator case was bare originally as others have said.
Some people like the finish having the case blasted gives using one of the softer mediums. The finish the blasting gives is different than the original though.
I cleaned both parts of the case with brass brushes and the dusted on a tiny bit of semi-gloss/flat clear to stop them from oxidizing.
What you do depends on what you'd like the appearance to be.
Regards,
Alan
