Hey guys
I own a 1974 corvette and I'll say this right now, I'm no mechanic, but I know a few things. I went to fix, what i thought was, bad rear u-joints because a squeak was coming from the back end, I lifted it the back end up a let the tires roll slowly just to make sure where the sound was coming from; when I noticed the wheels would hop about an inch. I put it in neutral and turned the wheels manually to find that just before hopping it got really hard to turn the wheels. I replaced the u-joints and the squeak's still there, as well as the hopping, do you guys have any idea why the tires are hopping?
you may have bad bearings .jack the car up.and spin the wheel.do you hear any noise? grab the wheel at 12 and 6 push pull then grab the wheel at 3 and 9and push pull, see if you have any play.if you have a lot of movement there is your problem.
You can't determine anything about rear wheel operation when the car is up in the air. The wheels droop much farther than the U-joints are made to tolerate. You will have to jack up the trailing arms to test out wheel operation.
