Default Speaker access?

I blew the passenger side speaker above the dash in my '77. It started crackling and now doesn't work at all. My question is how do you get to it for replacement and how big a job is it??

Not too bad at all. First remove your L&R pillar trims. Remove screws on upper L&R lower dashes at the underside of the upper dash. You then should be able to tilt the upper dash up to expose the speakers.

Can't you just remove the right-side [lower] dash panel to get access?

4 screws The thing to watch out for is if its the original stereo the speakers are 10 ohm???? and if you put something diff in (ohm wise)they will blow the output transistors.
The 77 may have a better radio than my 75 .Im in the process of putting my old am/fm radio from 75 back in and Im having A Hard time finding 10 ohm speakers.
Your lucky the driver side speaker is harder.

Make sure you add some type of screen over the speaker, I used a woman's stocking. If you don't cover the speaker; dirt drops in the top panel holes and creates nasty sound. You don't want to install it again because of vibration noise. Also, check the cast metal speaker bracket, it has ribs where the 4 studs attach to the speaker. If they are pulled up to tight, the ribs dig into the speaker cone and vibrate. I added a washer between the speaker and the speaker cast metal bracket.

You might want to upgrade your speakers while your at it, replace both (better sound). Best way to do this is to take out the top panel and do it on a bench. Not hard. Remove both column covers R/H & L/H, remove all the upper dash screws and 1 screw in the middle support bracket and the 1 at the windshield wiper switch. Reverse to assemble.

If you only want to replace the passenger side speaker, then just remove the passenger side lower dash panel. Screws are at the top, at the door edge and at the edge of the center panel - all are quite obvious and visible. You can then reach up and unbolt the speaker. If you have the original radio and need the original type 10 ohm speakers, you can get them through Volunteer Vette Products. If you want to change both speakers then I would pull the upper dash pad as that is the only practical way to access the drivers side speaker. Also if you do change out the drivers side speaker, the vertical clearance between the bottom of the speaker and the top of the tach and speedo cluster is very tight so replacement speakers must not extend down more than the originals. The Volunteer Vette Speakers went into both sides of my 74' with no clearance problems. You willl however need to slightly enlarge the mounting holes in the new speakers to get them to slide easily over the mounting studs.
