I have a 72, I purchased in boxes. I have just gotten to the wipers/wiper door and have run into a problem. When I installed the wiper door the molding has holes for screws and the door does not (I guess the door is a 68). I have also found that with the door installed I am not able to install the grate. Could this be the result of having a 68 door and not the correct 72 or am I missing on the adjustments?
Thanks for your help.
Hi 72,
There is a very recent thread about the difference in the 68 wiperdoor ss trim, (no provision for a screw or drive rivet), and the later 68 and up trim. There MAY be a difference in the 68 mechanism too, I'm not sure
I'll post a picture of my 71's grill and door so you can see the relationship between the hood, grill, door, and fender and trim. You do need to do some juggleing and perhaps shimming to get all the gaps the way you want them.
It's a bit of work!

Alan
The assembly on mine, 1968 #13092 is the same as yours Al. ...the only difference is my yellow paint......thin stainless strip on all three pieces and the fit is the same or as good as it gets...also no holes except for those 2 on each end of the actual door to the monkey motion rack holding the door......
Thanks for the help, I have been out of town and not able to use your advise. I will look into the shims. The door will not pass the grate and close properly. If the shims will move the door toward the windshield that might solve my problem. Any problem with using the 68 door with the 69-72 trim? I just wont have a way to secure the ends of the trim.
I have a few pictures of the door installed. I am not able to get the grate installed with the door. The wiper door pushes the grate past the flange holes. Is this the result of not enough shims on the wiper trans?
Hi 72,
Remember that if you shim the mechanism to the cowl it moves the wiper door closer to the windshield. Will that be o.k.?
On my 71 I needed just one shim on each cowl mount but also had to elongate the holes in the grill to get the grill where I wanted it relative to the front of the wiper door and the rear of the hood.
Even in the AIM the gap guide lines have a wider gap from hood to grill than from grill to door.
It's not easy even with parts you're sure of. You end up making tiny gains a little at a time.
Regards,
Alan
PS: Are you sure the wiper door stops are adjusted to allow the door to move all the way back? This screw on the mechanism, and stop on the cowl, determine how far back and how high the door is in the fully closed position.
Hi 72,
Good Luck!
I'll be curious to see how things turn out.
The wiper door is a real headache, but is VERY cool (and VERY 70s) when it works.
Regards,
Alan
