let me rephrase the question ,does anyone have a c3 with sidepipes and have a exhaust problem smell in car , is this what to expect ,I'm trying to narrow down the problem
You need to tune your carb, if it is new a rebuild is not neccessarily needed. Sounds like the idle mixture screws are out too far or the power valve is blown.
Narrow this down- is it a raw gas smell or a rich exhaust smell? Smell like a gas pump or make your eyes burn?
Ol' Red has worn sidepipes since it was built (Nov 68, came from the factory, and got switch to header/sidepipes in '71). The only real problem is when the power valve in the carb let go- it'd make your eyes burn.
I have Hooker sidepipes on my 79. No objectionable odors come into the cabin when driving or at a stop sign, even when the T tops are off. They affect my ears more than my nose.

I have a 78' with side pipes. Never had a problem with fumes. Are yours the Hooker side pipes?
Rebuilding the carb will not affect whether exhaust will get into the cabin or not; two separate issues. Exhaust would be getting in even if you had F/I. I am switching to side exhaust on my 69 and will prob be running with the tops off and the back window out most of the time and was wondering the same thing about fumes. Before i pulled the body i used to come home smelling like exhaust and the old lady hated it.
To the O/P, check for openings in the firewall, the rubber plugs that fell out, holes drilled etc. I had several. Also check for leaks at all the pipe connection points. There was a wind tunnel video a while back, i bet if they ran the smoke out of the exhaust that too would have been interesting...

on my buddy's 68 Mustang Fastback...Hell Yes!!! I about tossed my cookies one time we were in stop & go traffic and all the fumes built up in his tailgate area getting into the cabin through the rear hatch.
I've got Hookers with the STS baffles and have a very strong odor. I'm pretty sure I have a lean condition and some carb issues. I've read that lean conditions can cause the odor too. Timing is ideal and I've adjusted the air screws for max vacuum. My next plan is to rebuild my quadrajet which I KNOW has issues and needs larger jets.
