Im thinking about removing my body so I can work on restoring my frame. I've never tried this before so I looking for a good source of information on the steps necessary to do this. Anyone have any suggestions or advice for a rookie?
Been through it a couple of times. Take your time. Whatever you plan on for time allowance as well as budget should be doubled before you start. If you have decent mechanical skills you should be able to do this easy enough. Just double check to make sure you have everything loose, then lift slowly and check again. It's really not that bad of a job.
I agree with Dalannex, you need a good plan and you need to figure on spending twice as much time and money as you think it's going to cost now.
I removed the body off the frame on my '79 and I thought it would just take alittle sandblasting and some new brake lines. I basically wanted to make sure the frame from solid before I invested more money in the car.
Well, once the body was off the frame, I started the 'might as well' process. Might as well get the T-arms rebuilt, might as well get the rear end done, might as well get remove the gas tank and get new hardware for that, you get the idea.
Also you will need a good place to store the body while its off the frame. I have two stalls in my brothers garage tied up with my car, until I get it put back together hopefully this summer.
Here's a pretty good link with some useful information. I agree with the other comments regarding budget, but remember the outcome is worth it! http://www.yl-gazette.com/tech/mackay.htm
Buy a sling!
Several vendors sell them.
I actually purchased the house we live in because of the 900 sq/ft garage
;). I rigged a 6x6 across the ceiling (wife calls it "Vette Henge") used a sling and BAM. That sucker has been off for two years and I am nearly done. I am a whacko for doing this in the first place....
