Default Cast Iron look

I have searched for information with no definative answer to try to find a paint that will give me a 'cast iron' look on the calipers, master cylinder, cross shafts, rearend, drive shaft and 4 speed transmission. I would like to by in a quart can to apply through a spray gun.

Any tips out there are appreciated.

Dano,
If you're trying to look 'original, the calipers should be painted semi flat black. M/C is usually semi flat black too. Transmissions should be natural aluminum

The calipers on the early C3's were not painted...they were bare cast iron. So, I believe the thought of painting them "cast iron" color is a good one.

VHT makes a 'cast iron' color paint that is also heat resistant. But, to cure it completely, you have to bake the painted part at a relatively high heat. To do so with the calipers, you would have to remove it and pull the pistons and seals out. [not a big deal, if they are already off]

Seymour makes a "cast blast" spray paint which is very good also. As far as getting a can of paint that you can put into your own sprayer, I'm not familiar with any sources for that. I'm sure a pro auto body paint supplier could provide you with that, however.

You sure about that? I've never seen an unpainted caliper on any original car.

All the chain auto parts stores sell Dupli-Color brand "Cast Coat Iron".
I used it over the Dupli-Color "Self Etching Primer" - loved it.

I used Rustolium "Stainless Steel" on the driveshafts though. Click Image

Calipers get hotter than 300 degrees.

Try Calyx manifold dressing.

No paint option

Hi Dano,
You might want to go to the EASTWOOD site. They sell a large selection of restoration tools, supplies, and paints.
You can request a catalogue which will show the WIDE range of paints they sell for various applications on the chassis and running gear along with everything else they sell.
Often having the various chassis parts finished in more appropriate finishes gives a very nice look.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

PS: I, too, would expect the brake calipers to be painted black except on the machined surfaces. The same goes for the master cylinder which I believe had 'foundry' black on it.

I've been using the Dupli-Color Cast Coat Iron lately with excellent results. This is an engine paint that is good to 500F.
